Did people use quills in the 1850's?
Quills were the main writing instrument from 6th to 19th century, the best of which were usually made from turkey, goose, and swan feathers. However, quills went into decline after the invention of the metal pen, first patented in America in 1810 and then produced by 1860. But that did not mean that some people still did not use Quills, it just means that metal pens, which were dipped into ink, were already invented. But yes, they still did use the Quill Pen

Dog got Stung by porcupine quills?
Honey, I am sorry, but that is NOT a myth it is the truth. We worked on a Pitt bull a couple of weeks ago, he had them all in his mouth. They are shaped almost like a check mark. This dog lost so much blood we thought we were going to have to give it a transfusion. Take your pet to the Vet. Most likely they will have to sedate him. Do not try to do this yourself, it is very painful for the dog and even though he would never intentionally hurt you, he might bite you because of the pain. I do not know where you live, but the porcupine quills here in Oklahoma do most definitely have little barbs/hooks on them

My dog met a porcupine and had 2 quills in her nose.......?
I would say, first off, get another vet. One who is willing to correctly address the situation and your concerns. Quills should not be pulled out before first cutting off the tips to relieve the air pressure inside, which makes it less painful for them to come out. Secondly, even if you had gotten both of the quills out without a problem, your vet should of asked you to bring the dog in at the very least for a quick wellness check and possibly prescribe some antibiotics and pain meds. Honestly, I would take your dog to a vet right away that is willing to look at it, because if it does not come out on it's own it may fester and cause even bigger problems. Not to mention, a porcupine quill stuck in the nose has got to be awfully painful.
