What type of inventory management software does a used car dealership use?
Used vehicles are tracked by VIN. Vehicles can be configured with engines, drivetrains, etc. and options can be added as well as photos and advertising comments for marketing purposes. There are many, many inventory management platforms that have varying features and scale. Some are part of a much broader suite of dealer management and marketing products and others stand on their own. Some of the companies in this space in varying forms mostly geared towards collecting inventory detail for marketing purposes are HomeNet, Vin Solutions, vAuto, CDMdata, DealerTrack, Auto Revo, Dealer Specialties, Liquid Motors, and probably at least a dozen more I'm either forgetting or are small customer base solutions that I'm not aware of. A few larger solutions in this space also partner to provide the inventory management backbone of other industry companies serving car dealers by white labeling their product, normalizing data, or other backend functions. If you're thinking of starting a business in this space which is why I think you might be asking the question, strong competitive differentiation to do something nobody else does or to do something way, way better than everyone else is the only way to get ahead and you have to constantly improve and maintain a stable product to stay ahead. If it were me and I was dead set on building SAAS products for dealers, I would start by interviewing different employees (sales managers, internet managers, GMs, the sales floor, and various fixed ops employees) and seeing if you can spend some time shadowing them to learn more about where they struggle. I think one recurring theme that you will find though is that these employees all already have way too many tools to log into and accomplish their jobs, particularly the internet manager who often manages an internet sales team as well as the online marketing for his store. At a certain point, adding another tool requires not only convincing them that the tool will save them time and cut cost or generate revenue, but also that it is worth it to have something else to manage and log into.
