Free University of Brussels (18341969)

The Free University of Brussels (French: Universit libre de Bruxelles, or ULB; Dutch: Vrije Hogeschool te Brussel, later Vrije Universiteit Brussel) was a university in Brussels, Belgium. Founded in 1834 on the principle of "free inquiry" (libre examen), its founders envisaged the institution as a free-thinker reaction to the traditional dominance of Catholicism in Belgian education. The institutions was avowedly secular and particularly associated with Liberal political movements during the era of pillarisation. The Free University was one of Belgium's major universities, together with the Catholic University of Leuven and the universities of Lige and Ghent. The "Linguistic Wars" affected the Free University, which split along language lines in 1969 becoming the second Belgian university to do so. Today two institutions carry the "Free University of Brussels" name: the French-speaking Universit libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the Dutch-speaking Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Both institutions continue to collaborate under the auspices of an umbrella organisation known as Brussels Free Universities.

Free University of Ireland

Free University of Ireland (Saor-Ollscoil na hireann) is an independent university in Prussia Street, Dublin, Ireland established in 1986 by a small group of educationalists including Daragh Smyth, Paul John Cannon, Kevin O'Byrne, Padraig O'Fiannachta, and Mairad N Chosig. The university is a free and independent institute not in receipt of state funding. It is run by a board of governors, is a charitable trust, and has research college status. Lecturers and administrators are not paid; students are charged only a fee to cover administrative expenses. The University provides tertiary education to degree standard in the humanities and social sciences for mature students. The building was the City Arms Hotel, frequented by James Joyce and mentioned several times in his novel Ulysses.

Copenhagen Free University

Copenhagen Free University (CFU, Danish: Det Fri Universitet i Kbenhavn) is an artist-run communist collective established in May 2001 in Copenhagen, Denmark, although it is not an accredited institution of higher learning. It considers itself as part of the international Situationist movement in collaboration with other like-minded organizations. The CFU committee comprises artists Henrietta Heise and Jakob Jakobsen, its founders. The CFU has a guide called The ABZ of the Copenhagen Free University with entries ranging from "self-institution" through "uneconomical behaviour" to "mass intellectuality". It publishes small books and brochures, as well as hosting discussions, conferences, and screenings. One of its publications is a research paper called The Rise and Fall of the Situationists, documenting the influence of the Situationist International in Denmark. The CFU also helps to run an artist-run television service named TV-TV, broadcast from a squat in Copenhagen (named Folkets Hus - People's House) three nights per week in airtime slots that used to be occupied by TV STop, using TV Stop's equipment. TV-TV's content is usually experimental, and its stated aim is to not be like mainstream television.

Free University of Tbilisi

Free University (Georgian: ) is a private research university in Tbilisi, Georgia, founded by Kakha Bendukidze, Georgian statesman, businessman and philanthropist often regarded as the Man Who Remade Georgia . Founded in 2007, the university has grown to comprise seven undergraduate and graduate schools, among which are, the university's oldest, School of International Relations, School of Business, Architecture, Governance and Social Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Law, and School of Visual Arts and Design. The main goal of Kakha Bendukidze, FreeUni's founder, was to provide opportunities for a quality education to every motivated person in Georgia, regardless of his or her financial conditions. Benudkidze believed that clarity of purpose and the future were essential to any human endeavour. The Free University is organized into 7 constituent schools: the university's oldest, International Relations (Institute of Asia and Africa), School of Business, Law, Physics, Computer Sciences and Math, Visual Arts and Design, Governance and Social Sciences. While the Free University is governed by a combination of its Board of Overseers and the Knowledge Foundation, each school's faculty oversees its curriculum and degree programs. In addition to a central campus shared with Agricultural University of Georgia in downtown Tbilisi, the University owns facilities all around Georgia, including Anaseuli Education Center. The current Rector of The Free University is Vakhtang Lezhava. There are 56 full-time and 84 part-time lecturers. 44 hold PhDs; 25 are PhD students. The programs are run on a daily basis by deans and academic coordinators.
