This being said, the potential for benefit in the "Free Trade Agreements" (so long as SUPPLEMENTS or SAFEGUARDS are in place for displaced American workers, which is why President Obama and the Democrats held up the bills according to the article you've cited) is substantial if all sides play fair. The Obama team has been working hard since January 2009 to boost our exports to other countries, including his deals with India and Indonesia last year that meant 54,000 American jobs for each deal, so anything that has the potential for increasing our manufacturing jobs base has bipartisan support and will probably benefit our nation's struggling economy. Why is Boehner salivating? My guess is corporate lobbyists have probably been lining his deep pockets, filling his dreams with sugar plums, and slipping him some freebies on the side.

Why don't we impose tariffs on British imports to the US until they agree to put the NHS on the line in a free trade deal?

For one, such tariffs would be paid by the American importer, not the British exporter. You would be punishing yourselves.Secondly, we would rather go running and screaming back to the EU than give into an imperialist American takeover of our NHS.The NHS, warts and all, is a source of pride for the UK. How successful is Trumpu2019s free trade goal now that the EU is joining in?

In a way, Trump has been a positive force for free trade. Since he has come into power, a number of trade agreements have been advaced or completed:TPP (now CPTPP) was signed making it the second largest trade agreement after NAFTA.The EU and Mexico moved forward on the EU-Mexico Trade Agreement, currently an agreement in principle. The CETA agreement between Canada and the EU was signed.The EU and Japan have finalised a trade agreement.None of these include the U.S. but free trade has moved forward in the past couple of years. I dare say Trump's actions have help get these ratified faster.Even if NAFTA is not killed, trade between these countries/blocks is likely to increase to avoid Trump/GOP tariffs. That is good for everyone (except the US) and would, IMHO, help build a more balanced global economy.
